A Class 12 Indian student from Dammam reportedly took his own life after failing his exams, the results of which were declared on Monday, according to community members.

Mir Ameer Ansari, 18, was an intelligent student, but took his life after failing in one of the subjects.

"He just couldn't come to terms with the fact that he could only score 17 out of 100 in mathematics," said a community elder. "Our prayers are with the family in these difficult hours."

Ansari's body has been kept at the Dammam Central Hospital and police are investigating the circumstances that led the boy to kill himself.

Ansari's parents are from Hyderabad, India. The family is distraught.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the Indian community in the Eastern Province, especially because Ansari had done well in almost all the subjects. He scored 73 out of 100 in English.

Indian students have paid tribute to Ansari on social media websites.

"I knew Ameer very well; I don't why he has taken his life; he had gotten a compartment (second chance) and could have easily cleared the math paper in a month or two," said his friend, Laeeq Ahmed, on Facebook.

The teaching community in Indian schools has expressed shock and grief and has called for sessions to counsel exam-stressed students.
