Emirates ID registration a must for FZE visa

Issuance and renewal of visas for residents under the sponsorship of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Trade Zone will soon be linked to registration for Emirates ID cards, the Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) yesterday announced in a statement.
The link will be facilitated by the preventive medicine department which was recently opened in Knowledge Village.
Hence, residents who apply for new visa or for visa renewal from Sunday (July 31) should first register for an Emirates ID.
According to the statement, the decision will also apply to all residents under the sponsorship of Dubai Internet City, Dubai Outsource Zone, Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City International Media Production Zone, Dubai Knowledge Village, Dubai International Academic City complex, Dubai Biotechnology and Research (DuBiotech), Enpark Energy and Environment, and Dubai Healthcare City.
Speaking to Gulf News, Dr Ali Mohammad Al Khoury, Director-General of Eida, said the decision to link the Knowledge Village preventive medicine department was part of the Eida's aim of linking Emirates ID registration with visa processes across the country by the end of the year.
The preventive medicine department in Dubai Knowledge Village is expected to process more than 3,600 visa application on a monthly basis.
In addition, all visa procedures in Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah require applicants to first apply for an Emirates ID card.

How to effectively deal with stress

Stress has become an integral part of our everyday lives. Be it an adolescent or an adult, stress seems to have become a common, unifying denominator, even though its sources and causes may vary. It is very important to find ways to cope with stress and ensure our growth and development on the
path of  success, both in our personal and professional lives.
1 Know your strengths and weaknesses: Have a good understanding of what your strengths are. Utilise these to succeed at what you do. Also, be aware of your weaknesses so that you are able to avoid the pitfalls associated with them and can also work upon them to transform them to strengths.
2 Prepare for change in life: Change is a part of our lives. It is a fact of life and one that we all need to accept and embrace and work with. The acceptance of this fact makes it easier to cope with stress as we then know and understand that things would change.
3 Be organised: Take a preventive approach. Why put additional pressure and stress on yourself by going beyond the time constraints? Try and work within the limits that time places upon you. Be better organised and do tasks according to a schedule so that they get accomplished on time.
4 Have a good social support system: Social support can act as a good way to handle stress. It is essential to have people around you who provide the right kind of support.

At the same time, these individuals should be those one can turn to not just for support but who also act like the devil’s advocate, helping you look at situations from all perspectives and making you think for yourself as well.
5 Be assertive: Being assertive does not mean becoming aggressive and unreasonable. Put forth your opinions and the way you want to do things with conviction while backing yourself up with the right evidence.

6 Work on healthy communication: Don’t bottle up. Becoming secluded and withdrawing into a shell does not help. Instead, have good, healthy communication.
Discussing things and having open channels of communication which allow for feedback and refutation enable one to be able to look at different sides of a matter and thus cope more effectively.

7 Have a healthy lifestyle: Sleep well, eat well, exercise. Being healthy and having a good lifestyle are very essential. These are the basics of trying to ensure that one is physically in a position to be able to cope with the different stressors that may exist in the environment.
8 Take breaks: Breaks are an absolute must. They not just rejuvenate the mind and body but give a good physical and mental break from the monotony of the things one engages in.
9 Be a problem-solver: Learn to take a proactive approach to the problems that confront you. It is imperative that you try and tackle problems. Develop an attitude of trying to resolve issues rather than running away from them or trying to push the responsibility for the same on to someone else’s shoulders.
10 Take help when needed: Always remember help is always at hand. Be it the help of adults around you, in the form of teachers and parents or in the form of your peers or that of counsellors or other professionals, take it when needed. It is not a sign of weakness, rather reflects the understanding you have of your own self.

Free trade agreement will help boost UAE-India economic ties

Dubai: A free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the UAE would help increase bilateral trade flow between the two countries, a top Non-Resident Indian businessman said.
"An agreement will not only help boost trade, but also give UAE investors greater access to growing Indian markets," Sudhesh K. Aggarwal, President of Indian Business Leaders Forum (IBLF), Chairman of Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC) Sharjah and Chairman and Managing Director of Giant Group of Industries, told Gulf News in an exclusive interview.
India-UAE bilateral trade rose from only $180 million in the 1970s to a whopping $43 billion per annum in 2009-2010, making the UAE India's largest trading partner. This is made up of $23.97 billion worth of exports and $19.49 billion worth of imports from the UAE.
India's trade with the UAE represents about 9.1 per cent of India's total trade valued at $467.12 billion in 2009-2010.
About 13.41 per cent of India's total exports land in the UAE — that serves the GCC, Iran, Iraq and parts of the Central Asian countries.
"Similarly, a FTA will help the UAE attract more Indian investment in the UAE's key economic areas. It will also help the large NRI investors who have been contributing to the UAE economy for decades," he said.
Non-Resident Indian (NRIs) make up the biggest community in the UAE, outnumbering all other nationalities. They are estimated to own nearly half of the UAE's registered companies that are currently active.
Aggarwal spoke at length about the FTA, trade and investment and his organisation's moves to strengthen the relations between the two countries.
Gulf News: What are the latest developments as far as the FTA between UAE and India is concerned? What is the role of the Indian business community in this regard?

Difference between A CV And A Resume

Literally Curriculum Vitae mean "The course of life" and Resume means "Summary". The major difference between them is their length. While considering both, CV is a detailed one that includes the information about your educational, academic details, teaching experience, research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors and other details.
But, a Resume is to the point and it strictly consists of the information that is relevant to the job. Potential employer needs only the resume and not the CV. Mostly the CV may consist of more than two pages but the resume can be expected of less than two pages.

In both CV and resume you should include your full name, address, contact information, education work experience and skills. Don't add irrelevant information to your resume and don't miss out the essential things in your CV. List your work experience in reverse chronological order. This format is not only easier for people to understand and is also considered professional.

In America, the general rule is to use a resume. But in some of the countries a CV is expected and often they are demanded. Most of the companies don't like lengthy descriptions and prefer the concise ones. Each word in your resume must have some worth or else it should be avoided.

Moreover, while applying for two different jobs your CV could be the same but your resume has to be different and specific to the job you have applied for. The different achievements that you have made related to that particular field should be highlighted in the resume. This shows that you are an eligible candidate and makes your resume stand out from the others.

Essential Security Practices and Controls

Tips: staying protected

Some simple, but essential security practices for organisations to embrace are as follows:

  • Focus on essential controls. Many enterprises make the mistake of pursuing exceptionally high security in certain areas while almost completely neglecting others. Businesses are much better protected if they implement essential controls across the entire organisation without exception.
  • Eliminate unnecessary data. If you do not need it, do not keep it. For data that must be kept, identify, monitor and securely store it.
  • Secure remote access services. Restrict these services to specific IP addresses and networks, minimising public access to them. Also, ensure that your enterprise is limiting access to sensitive information within the network.
  • Audit user accounts and monitor users with privileged identity. The best approach is to trust users but monitor them through pre-employment screening, limiting user privileges and using separation of duties. Managers should provide direction, as well as supervise employees to ensure they are following security policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and mine event logs. Focus on the obvious issues that logs pick up, not the minutae. Reducing the compromise-to-discovery timeframe from weeks and months to days can pay huge dividends.
  • Be aware of physical security assets. Pay close attention to payment card input devices, such as ATMs and gas pumps, for tampering and manipulation.

Dubai economy back on growth track

  • By Saifur Rahman, Business Editor
  • Published: 00:00 July 15, 2011
Prices of properties in some parts of Dubai are showing signs of recovery!

Dubai: There is a buzz in the air: Dubai's economy has come out of recession and growth is picking up. Interesting times are ahead. However, the big question is, is the real estate sector picking up?
"The economy is back on a growth track and we see the market picking up. We have witnessed steady growth and we look forward to a better growth track going forward," Hesham Abdullah Al Qasim, Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer of the Dubai Real Estate Corporation (DREC), told Gulf News in an interview.
Asset value erosion has been arrested while in some places prices of properties are showing signs of recovery, he said.
"Asset demand is going to go up and we see prices of villas are beginning to appreciate in certain locations in Dubai," he added.
The Dubai government established DREC in June 2007, combining the assets of the Development Board and Dubai Real Estate Department, through Law No 14 that says the corporation shall be a public commercial institution.
With DREC the Dubai government has effectively corporatised its rental and leasehold assets under a single entity. In order to help the market and ease pressure on rents, DREC earlier undertook a massive housing scheme to provide affordable homes. The new 5,000 units are part of the pack.
This has helped the government to effectively balance the rental market by revising rents periodically — upwards or downwards depending on the demand and supply situation — and protect residents from rent-related inflationary pressures as the market became too commercialised.
DREC has a residential portfolio of 25,000 units currently being managed by its asset management arm, Wasl Properties, with an occupancy rate of 92-93 per cent. The company has delivered about 5,000 units during the last four years and has a few hundred units currently under development.
The Dubai Government amended the law that helped set up DREC in 2007, bringing it under the direct control of the Ruler's Court, from the Investment Corporation of Dubai, giving it a wider mandate to expand its portfolio and achieve greater financial independence.

Dubai leads list of global hotel projects under construction

UAE tops list of 11 global markets with the most hospitality developments
  • By Shweta Jain, Senior Reporter

Dubai: Dubai powered the UAE to the top of a list ranking the 11 global markets with the largest number of hotel projects in the latest report released by Tophotelprojects.com, a database for hotel projects.
With a massive 97 upscale hotel projects under way, the study — which analysed facts and data of over 4,300 projects worldwide — reveals that Dubai is taking the lead in the construction of hotel projects in the UAE.

The emirate is closely followed by Abu Dhabi with 66 projects and Ras Al Khaimah with 14, bringing the total to 177 under construction in the UAE.

Other global markets with a high number of hotel projects under way include Berlin with 49, New York City with 43, Moscow with 32 and Marrakesh with 24.

The numbers fuel fears recently voiced by some industry experts about an oversupply (of rooms) in the UAE hotel market. Global consultancy CBRE recently pointed out that Dubai hotels' exposure to the tourism sector and an oversupply of luxury accommodation will "likely delay a recovery in room rates".

Supply of rooms
The latest numbers by Tophotelprojects.com, show 61,333 hotel rooms still due to become available in the UAE's upscale hotels segment, of which Dubai alone has 35,154 rooms, followed by 21,572 anticipated in Abu Dhabi and 4,607 in Ras Al Khaimah.

Commenting on Dubai's sustained performance, Alex Kyriakidis, Global Managing Director for Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure at Deloitte, told Gulf News: "Dubai's hospitality sector continues to deliver good results in 2011. For the year to May 2011, STR Global reports Dubai occupancy at 79 per cent, ADR (average daily rate) at $239 (Dh877) and RevPar (revenue per available room) of $189, which is second only to Riyadh in the Middle East." He added that this is being achieved despite the total number of operational rooms "increasing from 30,000 to 50,000" over the past five years.
Global real estate investment and advisory firm Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) said in its recent second quarter 2011 report that project delays and cancellations will "contribute to smoother absorption of new supply". According to JLL estimates, at the end of the second quarter, the total hotel supply in Dubai stands at "approximately 52,300 rooms".

Dubai's hotel rooms are also much more diversified today, said Kyriakidis. "Five years ago, over 80 per cent of Dubai's hotel rooms were in the upscale to luxury segments. Today, this is down to 60 per cent, which means that more rooms have come on stream in the midscale to limited service segments, thus providing an offer to tourists at all ends of the spectrum, from luxury to limited service," Kyriakidis said, adding that Dubai was the "most diversified" market in the GCC.

According to the JLL study, the first half of 2011 saw the addition of "1,200 branded hotel rooms" in Dubai, with some 2,500 rooms expected to enter the market in the second half of the year. And approximately "12,500 additional guest rooms" are expected to be completed by 2013, JLL estimates.
Despite the credit crunch the hotel development business continues to do well, says the Tophotelprojects.com report.

Citing the Dubailand project being developed by Tatweer, the report stated the project would be realised with several large theme- and event-oriented hotels.

"Among the listed projects one still finds the ‘Asia Asia' hotel project with nearly 6,500 guest rooms scheduled to open in the coming years," it said.
Top 11 cities worldwide
Benefit
Meanwhile, the geo-political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, helped somewhat to boost Dubai's hotels sector.

"It is clear that Dubai has benefited from the unrest in Egypt, Tunisia and Oman, which may explain the buoyancy in occupancy rates," said Kyriakidis.

Also, having experienced a significant decline in 2009 and 2010, the average trading performance of Dubai hotels saw an improvement in the first four months of 2011, according to JLL. It said RevPAR levels in Dubai hotels showed a five per cent growth over the same period in 2010, exceeding $200 year to date as of last April.

Although Dubai still leads in terms of hotel construction, the largest hotel projects set to open within the next two years are in Las Vegas, according to Tophotelprojects.com estimates.

It adds that the German capital, Berlin, is expected to be flooded with nearly 10,000 new rooms.
The study reveals that hotel managers in Berlin are increasingly under pressure with its 49 new projects and 9,800 new rooms.

The prestigious Waldorf Astoria hotel (232 rooms) is under way, besides other projects.

Google Plus vs Facebook – An Overview

Google has again entered into the social networking game with new strategies. Google’s new social networking platform Google plus has been released as an “Invite only” release and this is a popular marketing technique nowadays to intensify the users’ urge to join while doing the beta testing with a limited number of users. I got an invite and explored it for a while and all I can say is Google+ is really cool. However, at this stage it’s very hard to predict if the Google plus vs Facebook competition will make sense. Because, social networking is a market that closely works on peoples’ psychology giving them a virtual world with an environment that they want. Google already has its social network Orkut, which has almost been ignored by many and it does not have any potential to grow. It’s still bit popular in India and a few other countries and it speaks all about it. Forget Orkut, even google has forgotten it now.

Facebook is the most successful social network in the internet history, unlike the other social networks facebook’s growth is solid and it keeps the platform changing frequently so as to give the people something new and keeping them busy with them so that they will not feel bored and think of going outside facebook (not for all but for the majority it works). Moreover facebook started challenging the other Internet giants who are/were not at all into the social networking business. Though google is still the largest Internet company, it has been affected a lot by the growth of facebook. How? Because google’s main income is coming from advertising (Google Ads) and after facebook started its advertising game (Facebook Ads) the advertisers have got another choice and the growth of facebook grabbed some advertising areas from google since the social network allows some kind of unique demographic targeting that a search engine or content network can’t provide. Still Google is bigger than facebook and the advertising market google has is much larger than Facebook but things can change in future.

Why google wants to get into the social networking business?

Search engines can’t expand their user-base in a bigger way like social networking platforms. If a person wants to search something on the Internet he will use google – that’s all (forget other search engines since they are too small compared to google). But the social network, on the other hand has a highly expanding user-base. Social networks drag the people into the virtual world and do the necessary things to keep them inside that virtual world for a long possible time while making them drag some other people too into this virtual world. The more a user spends his time on facebook the greater the money facebook makes. Today facebook has set many new standards to social networking and now facebook’s standards have become as the current definitions of social networking. Thus, google can not go away from the current social networking standards and eventually the Google+ looks like a facebook clone. However, one of the nature of the business world is “Copying from other successful businesses”. Facebook copied some core concepts of twitter too in their later releases and those features helped facebook to expand its boundaries even more. Due to these issues I don’t see the copying some features of facebook and any other social networks is not going to make google looks bad. It is just business and as a user what I only want is a social networking platform that gives me the environment I want.

The best way to describe an unknown is comparing it with a well known, let me compare Google+ and Facebook!
Google plus vs Facebook – My thoughts :

The pluses of Google+ over Facebook

Google+ provides better privacy and well layered grouping – Circles
Google+ does not have annoying applications like facebook (may be yet)
Google+ combines facebook and twitter together when the main features are concerned
Google+ is simple and sweet – May be just because it is new
Google+ uses the google chat for chatting. It is much better than facebook chat

The minuses of Google+ over Facebook

Google+ lacks some features that facebook has (Since it’s new and beta)
