Hyderabad competes with Melbourne, Beijing

Hyderabad: Hyderabad has bounced back as the single biggest destination for holding conventions in the country. The convention market looks very promising once again, after having taken a hit for two years due to the Telangana issue. The single biggest convention facility in the country, HICC, has seen a huge increase in registrations. Hyderabad city as a convention destination is now competing with cities such as Melbourne, Sydney and Beijing, according to HICC sales and marketing director.

With one to three events on any given day, the convention centre is doing brisk business. There were barely 15 to 20 conventions a month held here a year ago and social functions had overtaken corporate events.

"Hyderabad is very popular with repeat guests. We need to create more awareness with event organisers around the world to unearth new markets globally. Hyderabad now competes with cities such as Melbourne, Sydney and Beijing. With campaigns like 'Incredible India', the country has seen its fair share of queries. Such campaigns have also helped create a positive image for India and promoted the convention business," said Rasika Singh, sales and marketing director, HICC and Novotel Hyderabad Convention Centre.

She adds that the city's welcoming approach and the fact that it has "retained its culture and heritage without getting overwhe-lmed by development and corporate culture," are added attractions. On an average, HICC sees one event every day of the year. The centre does 70 per cent of corporate functions and 30 per cent of social events and weddings. The ratio of international to domestic events is also 30:70.
