Assuming the best about God is one aspect of our belief in Him, since it is based upon our belief in His mercy, power, generosity, and might.
Jabir ibn `Abdullah Al-Ansari relates that he heard Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say three days before his death:
"None of you should ever die except while assuming the best about Allah." (Muslim)
It is wrong for any Muslim to think ill of God. A Muslim should always assume the best about his Lord. As long as the Muslim is striving to engage in good deeds, he should expect the best outcome: that God will accept his good deeds; that God from His grace will forgive him; and that He will bless him to live out his life, until its end, upon faith. This is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) said the abovementioned hadith.
Ibn al-Qayyim says:
"There can be no doubt that assuming the best about God only comes as a result of righteous conduct. It is the righteous person who assumes the best about his Lord, since he knows that God will reward him for his good deeds and will never break His promise".
On the other hand, the sinner who persists in wrongdoing, injustice, and disobedience is prevented by his evil deeds from assuming the best about his Lord. We can see a similar situation in how people relate to each other.
A runaway slave, for instance, is not going to assume the best of his master. Good assumptions never go hand in hand with the disturbed state of disobedience. A sinner is estranged from his Lord to the extent of his sinfulness. The person who has the best outlook on his Lord is invariably the one who is the most obedient to his Lord. Al-Hasan al-Basri said:
"The believer assumes the best about his Lord so he does the best deeds. The sinner assumes the worst about his Lord, so he does evil deeds."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) related to us that God says:
"I am as My servant thinks of Me. I am with him when he remembers Me. If he mentions Me within himself, I mention him within Myself. If he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in a better assembly. If he comes near to Me a handspan, I come near to him the distance of a cubit. If he comes near to Me the distance of a cubit, I come near to him the distance of two outspread arms. If he comes to Me walking, I come to him running." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Think about these words. The first thing God calls us towards is to have a positive outlook about Him under all circumstances, since He will be as His servant thinks of Him.
God will relate to the person the way he expects Him to. When the servant assumes the best about his Lord and pins his hopes on his Lord's providence, his Lord will not disappoint him. God will never let his good deeds go unrewarded. When the servant beseeches God, he believes that his prayer will be answered. When he sincerely repents for a sin, he trusts that God will forgive him. When he performs a virtuous deed, he assumes that God will accept it from him and reward him for it. All of this is part of assuming the best about God. This is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"When you beseech Allah in supplication, be convinced that He will answer you." (At-Tirmidhi)
Our assuming the best about God really means pinning our hopes and expectations on Him. |
Assuming the best about God is one aspect of our belief in Him, since it is based upon our belief in His mercy, power, generosity, and might. It is also a fundamental aspect of our reliance upon God, which is essential to our monotheistic belief.
God rebuked a group of people who thought ill of Him. He shows their bad expectations about Him to be one of the clearest signs of their hypocrisy. He says about the hypocrites who abandoned the Prophet Muhammad and his companions during the Battle of Uhud: {Another party was stirred to anxiety by their own feelings, moved by wrong suspicions of Allah – suspicions due to ignorance.} (Al `Imran 3: 154)
Elsewhere, God says about the hypocrites: {…the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women, and the idolatrous men and the idolatrous women, who think an evil thought concerning Allah.} (Al-Fath 48: 6)
Our assuming the best about God really means pinning our hopes and expectations on Him. We know that God can be severe in punishment as well as most merciful, but we must hope for His mercy and be confident that if we sincerely repent for our sins and strive to do good, we will attain God's mercy.
We must never despair. We must never see our sins to be too great for God's forgiveness. That despair itself is a great sin. God says, conveying to us the words of Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him):
{Never despair of Allah's mercy. No one despairs of Allah's mercy except the unbelieving people.} (Yusuf 12: 87)

ALLAH'S Beautiful Name: AL-HAQQ - The Truth, The Real
That is because Allah— He is the Truth , and what you call upon besides Him is falsehood. Allah is the All-High, the Most Great.
(Surah Luqman, 31:30)
As is the case with all living and non-living beings, space and time are also created concepts. In a moment when space and time were non-existent, the universe was suddenly created from non-existence, and from within this universe emerged the concepts of space and time. Indeed, as we go back in time, we encounter a limit that we can never cross: the moment the universe was created. Modern science has determined this limit to be 10-43 seconds after the moment the universe was created. Before this, space and time could not be defined.
At this point, we encounter a dimension in which space and time did not exist. As these two concepts that limit humanity were "created" at a certain time, spacelessness and timelessness existed before this "creation." The One Who created these concepts is Allah, Who is utterly exalted above them and, consequently, Everlasting. This fact never changes, for only He has genuine existence. Outside His existence, everything is mortal and doomed to perish. As the Qur'an informs us, the only Truth is Him:
High exalted be Allah, the King, the Real! Do not rush ahead with the Qur'an before its revelation to you is complete, and say: "My Lord, increase me in knowledge." (Surah Ta Ha, 20:114)
That is because Allah is the Real, gives life to the dead, and has power over all things.
(Surat al-Hajj, 22:6)
In that situation the only protection is from Allah, the Real. He gives the best reward and the best outcome. (Surat al-Kahf, 18:44)
The Prophet (saas) used to glorify our Lord, saying:
"You are the Truth, Your saying is the Truth, Your promise is the Truth, and the meeting with You is the Truth, and Paradise is the Truth, and the (Hell) Fire is the Truth." (Sahih Bukhari)

The virtues and benefits of ZamZam water
by Shaykh Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid
Question : What is the status of Zamzam water? What are its virtues? Why are Muslims so keen on Zamzam water? Answer : Praise be to Allaah. Imaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Zamzam water is the best and noblest of all waters, the highest in status, the dearest to people, the most precious and valuable to them. It was dug by Jibreel and is the water with which Allaah quenched the thirst of Ismaa'eel. It was reported in Saheeh Muslim that the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to Abu Dharr, who had stayed near the Ka'bah and its coverings for forty days and nights with no food or drink other than (Zamzam):
| "How long have you been here?" Abu Dharr said: "I have been here for thirty days and nights." The Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "Who has been feeding you?" He said, "I have had nothing but Zamzam water, and I have gotten so fat that I have folds of fat on my stomach. I do not feel any of the tiredness or weakness of hunger and I have not become thin." The Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Verily, it is blessed, it is food that nourishes." (Narrated by Imaam Muslim, 2473).
|
Other scholars added, with their own isnaads, "… and a healing for sickness." This was narrated by al-Bazzaar (1171, 1172) and al-Tabaraani in al-Sagheer (295). In Sunan Ibn Maajah (al-Manaasik, 3062) it was reported from Jaabir ibn 'Abd-Allaah that the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
| "The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for."
|
The Salaf and 'ulamaa' acted upon this Hadeeth. When 'Abd-Allaah ibn al-Mubaarak went for Hajj, he came to Zamzam and said,
| "O Allaah, Ibn Abi'l-Mawaali told us from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir from Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) that Your Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, 'The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.' I am drinking it to ward off thirst on the Day of Resurrection." Ibn Abi'l-Mawaali is thiqah (trustworthy) so the hadeeth is hasan (good).
|
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Myself and others tried seeking healing with Zamzam water and saw wondrous things. I sought healing with it from a number of illnesses, and I was healed by the permission of Allaah. I saw someone who nourished himself with it for a number of days, half a month or more, and he did not feel hunger; he performed Tawaaf along with the other people just as they did. And he told me that he consumed nothing but Zamzam water for forty days and he had the strength to have intercourse with his wife, to fast and to perform Tawaaf numerous times. Zaad al-Ma'aad, 4/319, 320. Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (may Allaah preserve him) said: So you should have the intention of what you want to gain by drinking this water. He should drink his fill, i.e., fill his stomach with it until it is filled to the ribs, because this water is good. A hadeeth has been narrated concerning this : the difference between the believers and the hypocrites is drinking one's fill of Zamzam water. (Narrated by Ibn Maajah in al-Manaasik, 1017; al-Haakim, 1/472). Al-Boosairi said: this is a saheeh isnaad; its men are mawthooqoon [trustworthy]. This is because Zamzam water is not sweet; it is somewhat salty, and the believer only drinks this somewhat salty water out of faith, believing that there is barakah (blessing) in it. So when he drinks his fill of it, this is a sign of faith. (Sharh al-Mumti', 7/377, 378, 379). Perhaps Allaah did not make it sweet so that people would not forget that the meaning of drinking it is an act of worship. Whatever the case, its taste is fine and there is nothing wrong with it. We ask Allaah to quench our thirst from the Cistern (al-Hawd) of His Prophet on the Day of the greatest thirst. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad (saws)
